We live in a culture that is so obsessed with beauty. What started as a little girl that paints her nails has moved to a teenager struggling with anorexia to be stick-thin… This teenager then turns into an insecure adult who has to have monthly visits to her plastic surgeon just to stay “beautiful”. Yes, this is just an example, but you know what I am talking about. Who even set this standard of so-called beauty?
Chris Shook and Megan Shook Alpha, co-authors of Beauty Begins: Making Peace with Your Reflection, dive in to the origin of beauty. Ready or not! Throughout the book, readers are reminded that beauty began in the heart of God, but it has been stolen by society and given a new “image”-a marred one. Sadly, instead of regaining a Biblical approach to beauty, we as women strive to be beautiful in the eyes of the world.
I appreciated the Shook’s straightforwardness throughout the book that was backed by Scripture, reminding us over and over again that true beauty begins in the heart of God, our Creator. Psalm 139:14 tells us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made-and until we start living in this truth we will be at war with our reflection. We will always be trying to live up to society’s standard of beauty-which isn’t beautiful at all!
Ladies, pick up a copy for your sister, niece, friend or for yourself! It is worth the read.
